It took until April 2025 – more than five years after the UK left the EU – for Gavin Watkins to realise he should have applied for post-Brexit residency. He has since lost his job, unemployment insurance and risks deportation.

I don’t understand this. I’m reading these stories and… sorry, but I’m getting the impression that some Brits think they are somehow “better” migrants who don’t need to worry about their immigration status. How is it possible to live abroad and not be sure about your legal status? I’m sorry, but apart from people who, due to their circumstances or condition, were genuinely unable to take action, it seems that many people simply ignored the paperwork and the requirements. Please start describing how cruel the system is when, for example, someone from India fails to apply for a visa extension. Are you dividing immigrants into “better” and “worse” ones?
  • Hi Tom, I think Brexit is quite a unique situation as people like Gavin, who for 20 years had the right to live and work in Sweden without needing to fill in any paperwork, suddenly had do so. As most had been living very comfortably and had never needed to deal with the Migration Agency, many got caught out. I suspect there will be a similar situation if the next government goes ahead and revokes people's permanent residency permits.

Horrific - I am so sorry - frankly furious - about this government. As I am writing this, SD’s Jimmie Åkesson is being interviewed on SR P4 (Titti Schultz). I hope that people realize that we have real fascists in this government, and September 13 is our last chance to vote them out. The right wing extremists are very, very dangerous. On-line hate is bad enough, but their background is really violent. They still encourage violence, more or less openly. (I keep referring to the Swedish cartoon character by Joakim Pirinen; Socker-Conny: “Med ett schysst järnrör slår man hela världen med häpnad!”) PS: The Swedish right wing are equal opportunity in the sense that their violence will target anybody. I know from experience. Blond blue eyed Swede 5,2 who outran skinheads numerous times, but was also kicked when I couldn’t get away / underground. DS.
